Traceroute Faster

You all must have used traceroute command while attending RHCE training to find the path to a target. The syntax of the traceroute is fairly simple:

traceroute target-ip / name

example can be – traceroute google.com

So traceroute will try to find the route or path to the destination specified. But sometimes traceroute can be very slow in giving the output, Reason it always, by default, tries to resolve IP to hostnames. So take some time.

You can instruct traceroute to avoid resolving hostnames by using -n option with traceroute. It will give you a much faster output.

Here I have used “time” command to show you the difference in time taken by traceroute with -n and without -n option.
